Visiting Nathula Pass, Gurudongmar Lake or other protected areas in Sikkim in 2026? Knowing which Sikkim permit in 2026 you need before you travel can help you avoid document issues, last-minute delays and being denied access at checkpoints. You do not need a special permit for every part of the state, but protected and border destinations such as Nathula Pass, Tsomgo Lake, Gurudongmar, Yumthang, Yumesamdong, Lachen, Lachung and Zuluk/Kupup have specific permit requirements. The rules also vary by nationality, destination and vehicle.

The Government of Sikkim identifies the Tsomgo-Nathula, Zuluk-Kupup, Lachen-Gurudongmar and Lachung-Yumesamdong routes among its protected areas.

Nathula Pass Permit 2026

A Nathula Pass permit is mandatory and is currently issued only to Indian nationals for a one-day trip. Applications are routed through government-registered travel agencies/tour operators. Nathula operates on designated days, while weather or security conditions can cause additional closures without advance notice.

For the application, carry an accepted government ID and passport-size photographs. Aadhaar Card is not valid for permit processing. The current government guidance lists Voter ID, Driving Licence, Central/State Government ID or Passport instead.

Gurudongmar & North Sikkim Permit

Travelling to Gurudongmar Lake, Lachen, Lachung, Yumthang or Yumesamdong takes you into protected areas where the applicable PAP and vehicle permissions are required.

For Lachen, Gurudongmar, Lachung and Yumesamdong, the current permit process involves the 3rd Mile Police Check Post and government-registered local travel agencies or tour operators. Foreign visitors face additional eligibility and route restrictions.

If your itinerary covers several North Sikkim destinations, confirm that the permit covers your complete route, rather than assuming one permit automatically includes every protected area.

Sikkim Permit Documents, Application & Fees

For Indian travellers, commonly required documents include:

  • Accepted government ID
  • Passport-size photographs
  • Vehicle documents where needed
  • Additional documents for minors, where required

The current government guidance says applications with the required documents should be submitted one day before travel. Protected-area tours must be arranged through government-registered travel agencies or tour operators. Travellers should also carry multiple permit copies because permits may be checked at several checkpoints.

If you’re travelling by bike or private car, separate vehicle-pass rules apply. For example, motorcycles entering PAP areas must generally have an engine capacity of at least 150cc. So confirm eligibility and documentation before starting the journey.

How To Apply for a Sikkim Permit in 2026

You should contact a Sikkim-registered travel agency or authorised local operator to confirm eligibility, submit your ID and photographs, and arrange the required permit for your destination. The new Sikkim INSPIRES online system is to make permit applications and verification digital, but the final process depends on when the system is officially launched. Do confirm the latest process, vehicle eligibility, fees and route restrictions before payment or travelling.

Sikkim Permit Fees 2026

Permit costs are changing under the 2026 system. Updated rate charts cover Nathula, Lachung, Lachen, Yumthang and Gurudongmar. Provisional figures include vehicle-based charges for the JN Road and North Sikkim routes, but these may still be revised. Confirm the final applicable fees with your registered operator before paying.

Can You Get a Sikkim Permit Online?

This is changing in 2026.

Sikkim is developing an Integrated Online Permit System for Restricted and Protected Areas, covering destinations such as Tsomgo, Nathula and the Lachung/Lachen circuits. The planned system will combine application creation, validation, online payments, tracking and permit generation into a single digital process.

Importantly, the government has stated that applications under the proposed system will be booked exclusively through registered tour operators, following a “One Permit, One Agency” model.

Do not confuse this tourist permit system with Sikkim's separate Government Vehicle e-Permit System, which is for a different purpose.

Sikkim Permit Changes From 1 October 2026

The major 2026 change is Sikkim’s move toward an AI-enabled, single-window online permit system for restricted and protected areas. The planned system includes digital applications, payments, tracking, permit generation and vehicle/check-post processing.

Current updates suggest one-day-prior applications, revised vehicle-wise fees and Sikkim-registered agencies, but travellers should verify the final notification as process details may still change.
